A Little Slice of Death
This second drawing for my Art House Sketchbook 2012 project is all about my fear of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME taking over my life, leaving me fast asleep like a certain fairytale character.
Still need to write some copy to accompany the drawing but hope to finish that next weekend.
The title of this piece is take from the quote: ‘Sleep… Oh! how I loathe those little slices of death.’ (Author unknown, various wordings commonly attributed to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Edgar Allan Poe, and Journey to the Center of the Earth)
Faber-Castell pencils 2B, 4B, 6B and 8B
Interesting quote regarding sleep. Actually I love to sleep because I’m a vivid dreamer and get about half my creative ideas overnight.
You created a very fascinating personal piece here. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for your feedback Bccmee – much appreciated as always.
Ah, now if I had some more lovely dreams about RA I might not mind sleeping so much either . It’s the excessive need for sleep over my weekends and the fact that I barely make it past dinner time that’s bothering me most. The way it affects all aspects of my life. I was studying for a degree but can’t manage the additional work now (as I’m trying to hang on to a full time job), so had to put that on hold. I used to go to the gym regularly and did some running and kayaking but haven’t managed anything more energetic than a short walk for the last two years. It’s bad for my social life as well. I have by no means a bad case of CFS/ME (at least I can still get out of bed and work!) but it is frustrating and when I’m going through a bad spell it does feel like I’m swallowed up in a very thick fog and bits of my life are, sort of, ‘dying’.
I still need to write a bit of text to go with this drawing for the project book but am happy with the artwork – especially as I haven’t done a pencil portrait for over ten years (actually, I think that might be more like 15 years!). Planning to do a few more, if the fatigue allows, and have actually selected a very nice John Porter image for the Christmas holidays 🙂
